Emergency: Bulldozer at gate of extinction, QLD.

Emergency: Bulldozer at gate of extinction, QLD.
The issue
We stand before a devastating ecological crisis unfolding on Lot 62 on FY2526 and Lot 1 on RP157007 in the Taabinga/Kingaroy area.
Local residents conducting wildlife checks over the past 48 hours have confirmed irrefutable evidence that this bushland is an essential home for Koalas:
Public Letter and Petition Submission
Subject: EMERGENCY: Bulldozer at the Gate of Extinction—Stop Clearing Koala Habitat NOW on Lot 62 on FY2526 & Lot 1 on RP157007
To:
The Federal Minister for the Environment
The Queensland Minister for the Environment and Science
The Mayor and Councillors of South Burnett Regional Council
Dear Elected Representatives and Fellow Australians,
IMMINENT THREAT: One Koala was observed right next to the operating bulldozer, demonstrating the shocking level of immediate danger.
VULNERABLE POPULATION: Sightings included one young female Koala with a Joey in the immediate area.
HIGH DENSITY HABITAT: Field inspections confirmed Koala Scat was identified approximately every 1 to 2 square metres, proving this is a critical, frequently used habitat, not merely a movement corridor.
This destruction is allowed because of a catastrophic failure in our laws: despite the high density of wildlife, this land is not officially identified on any government map as a Protection Zone, but it is recognised as Koala District C. This failure is resulting in the death sentence for a vulnerable Australian species due to outdated and geographically restricted conservation policies.
DEMAND FOR ACTION: Two Essential Steps:
We call on every signatory to demand the immediate intervention to save these Koalas and a fundamental reform of the policies that failed them.
Step 1: Demand Stop This Clearing NOW (Immediate Action)
We demand that the Local and State governments use their existing enforcement powers to immediately prevent further destruction on Lot 62 on FY2526 and Lot 1 on RP157007:
South Burnett Regional Council (SBRC): Immediately issue a Stop Work Order for all Operational Work (clearing/earthworks). Since the original subdivision permit has lapsed, any large-scale land modification (such as filling or excavation exceeding specified thresholds) requires current planning approval and must adhere to standards protecting environmental significance and biodiversity values—which this destruction clearly violates.
Queensland Department of the Environment (DETSI): Immediately enforce the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and investigate the life threatening bulldozing and habitat destroying clearing reported. We demand an urgent intervention based on the confirmed presence of Koalas, multiple listed on government mapping and the 2 recent sightings among many others, including a mother and joey, to prevent animal death or injury.
Step 2: Request Legislative Change for Ongoing Protection (Permanent Reform)
We demand that the following specific policy changes be enacted to permanently protect this land and close the geographic loopholes that threaten regional Koala habitats across Australia:
Queensland State Government: The State’s Koala Habitat Mapping, which provides mandatory protections, is currently focused on South East Queensland (SEQ), leaving this regional habitat vulnerable. We demand that the Queensland Government use the confirmed evidence of high Koala activity to immediately make an official determination that Lot 62 on FY2526 and Lot 1 on RP157007 are Koala Habitat Areas.
South Burnett Regional Council: The SBRC Planning Scheme must be reformed. We demand that the Council immediately amend its local planning maps, specifically the Biodiversity Overlay (Overlay Map 05) , to formally include Lot 62 on FY2526 and Lot 1 on RP157007 and all other significant areas within the South Burnett. This action will activate local performance outcomes that legally require works to be confined to unmapped areas or mitigated by a qualified ecologist, fulfilling the Scheme’s goal to protect biodiversity.
Federal Government: We demand the Federal Minister for the Environment use the powers of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to intervene. The Australian Government must accelerate and broaden the Strategic Assessment for SEQ to cover vulnerable regional areas, providing a national protection layer that overrides fragmented State and Local government mapping.
We thankyou for reading and supporting this petition, we implore you to please share as far, wide and as many times as you can to gather support to protect not just our local habitat, but all native habitat around Australia!
