Embracing All the Perfectly Imperfect

Embracing All the Perfectly Imperfect
The Issue
“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” is a famous catchphrase from a movie that shows beauty has always been multifaceted. When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Or do you wish you were someone who you often see on media? Beauty standards can have significant impacts on society. The persistent pressure on individuals to match unrealistic beauty standards influences different aspects of individuals’ lives and societal dynamics such as low self-esteem, discrimination, and mental health effects in general.
"I don't belong here", "Why do I look like this?", "I don't deserve to be loved". These words may only just be heard by others but the victims who experienced being bullied, judged, and discriminated against by their looks have lived up to these words believing that no matter the changes in their looks may be, the pain and the trauma would still be stuck into their head and heart. Based on Wolke et al., (2015), the significant impact of getting bullied because of the looks of a person is developing self-harm and suicidality. We want to emphasize this as the reason for our advocacy, as this means that beauty standards are what many of us believe to be true, but truly this is just an illusion, opinion, and judgment. Dwelling into following the beauty standard may lead to serious health matters, affecting the overall well-being of a person. Having lighter skin, a symmetrical face, a toned-up body, and many more of the normalized beauty standards, do not define who we truly are. Humans naturally get fond of the beautiful things in life and this creates a barrier in truly accepting the reality. The reality is no matter what our appearances are, we will always still be judged and questioned by our flaws and imperfections. It was influenced by social media that portrays beauty standards heavily (UNICEF, 2021). Society is easily influenced by what we see in media, it causes individuals to look like what people expect them to be. We advocate to cease the said beauty standard, and promote inclusivity, to accept that all of us are just humans with different appearances but that does not allow us to be treated differently according to our appearances. So, for the people who are afraid to voice out, seek help, and accept reality, we are here listening, we are here to make you realize that we are all perfectly imperfect.
The main goal of this advocacy is to address the pressure on the unrealistic beauty standards that impact individuals' lives. Specifically, it will cover the following:
- Raise Awareness: Raise awareness of the harmful impacts of putting pressure on oneself due to beauty standards. We aim to highlight the diversity of human appearance and how everyone is beautiful in their own way.
- Promote Inclusivity: Recognize beauty in different forms, including different body shapes, skin tones, and other attributes. Through our advocacy, we can create a broader definition of beauty.
- Promote Self-Acceptance: Promoting self-acceptance and self-love which foster a positive self-image, and increase confidence. By encouraging others to embrace their uniqueness, we aim to empower them to find a sense of self-worth.
