Health care workers face unprecedented danger while taking care of patients infected with COVID-19.  As different states and countries start easing the lockdowns, one can expect the number of patients to increase even further.  In spite of the tremendous risks they face, these brave souls continue to serve.  

Face shields and facemasks protect only to a certain extent, especially for those that are continuously exposed to the virus. Placing a breathing tube in patients with COVID-19 can pose a high risk to health care workers, as it may expose them to aerosols and droplets from a patient’s airways. There is a need for better protection for health care workers.

A full face, helmet-like gear will offer significantly better protection. The gear should be transparent in the front, support removable air filters, and provide air tight protection around the neck.  The design can be similar to a Helmet Based Ventilation system but without the tubes needed for oxygen.

Airtight seal near the neck is very important. Look at the design of the helmet type ventilator created by Sea Long Medical Systems.

A cooling mechanism is optional. A simple to build solution could involve using salt and ice mixture stored in a box attached to, but external to the helmet.

A mechanism to allow touching eyes, mouth, nose without taking off the helmet is optional. A simple to build solution could involve attaching a large rubber glove with the hand opening outside the helmet. This design is similar to rubber gloves attached to mobile testing units.

A mechanism to allow sneezing without taking the helmet off is optional. A simple to build solution could involve a small sneeze guard with external knobs to turn it up or down.

This device will not only help healthcare workers but if it's not too expensive, it will also help the general population. People can start feeling free to move around without the fear of getting infected.

This device could make a huge difference to the future of our earth ravaged by COVID-19.

This is certainly doable if the brightest and most creative minds of our times take inspiration from this and design/build a full-face protection system.
