Get rid of All-Access Meal Plans and go back to Block Plans
The Issue
The incoming Class of 2015 at Elon University had no choice but to choose the brand new All-Access meal plans on campus. This plan was marketed as a better alternative to the Block Meal plan, but has not been proving itself. The All-Access plans provide “24-7” unlimited access to the three dining halls on campus. What the description does not tell you is that the actual dining hall hours are extremely limited. Furthermore, the food in the dining halls is often sub-par.
The Colonnades dining hall often over-extends its reach in an attempt to be global, producing less-than-average food at its best. The pizza is greasy, and the new stir-fry is basically a lackluster version of the one in McEwen. Upstairs McEwen occasionally has good pasta, and the stir-fry is delicious, but often the wonderful cook is lacking her best sauces. Sometimes the best part of McEwen is not even the food, but the friendly staff. Finally, Harden Dining Hall. This place is more or less of a joke. Only really for those who live over on that side on the campus, Harden is known as the worst food on campus, and despite its many offerings, sometimes what you eat tastes like baby food.
One might say, well, that is the way of college; you are stuck with your dining halls. But that is not the way it was at Elon until recently. Some students are able to use the Block Plan, which provides the student with a set amount of meals. However, these meals can be used at some of the nicer places on campus, such as Pan Geos, Varsity, Octagon, and Downstairs Colonnades. If a freshman is out of Food Dollars and Phoenix cash, she cannot use any part of her meal plan at these places. However, those with a block plan can use their meals freely and enjoy the food they receive.
Elon is an amazing institution, with great academics and great students with great potential. Yet, why are you giving such great students such bad meal plans, if not to save a few bucks? I would be a much happier student and have fewer monetary concerns while just trying to grab a meal if my meal plan could change. We, the students of Elon University, want to change these meal plans, as they are adding unnecessary stress to students on a daily basis when all they want to do is sit down and enjoy a good meal.
