Mya Cisneros started this petition to Eller College of Management and

We need an optional pass/fail system implemented for the ACCT 210 course held this 2020 fall semester. Here is our reasoning:

1. Over the course of this semester, Professor Blanchard has shown a blatant disrespect towards his own students and we fear that our grades and standing in Eller will be impacted negatively. Many of us feel uncomfortable in asking Professor Blanchard for help, and when we do ask, we are often met with dismissive remarks. Rather than suggesting helpful ways to improve our study habits, he prefers to insult us during class and call us bad students for not meeting his standards. This has contributed to a hostile learning environment, and many students are fearful of failing his class.

2. In Pima County alone, total weekly new cases increased by 66%, while the number of diagnostic tests increased by 14% from Oct. 11-17 to Oct. 18-24 (Arizona Department of Health Services). Although online classes help slow the spread of the virus, they still require intellectual and sometimes emotional labor. This labor should not be the focus of students right now. We should be self-isolating and focusing on our health, so that we don't get the virus. It's unreasonable to expect students to still be productive in a time of crisis. This is expecting too much from us, especially as COVID cases begin to rise again.

3. As mentioned, it's unreasonable for the university to still expect productivity from its students when both Professor Blanchard and the virus are causing immense stress. The option of a pass/fail system will honor the work that we have already done in the ACCT 210 course. We should be planning how to survive the virus and quarantine ourselves, not how we’re going to pass this class.
