Impose trade sanctions for nations with unsafe bio-security in their (wet) meat markets

The Issue

We the undersigned call on our government to initiate financial and trade sanctions against; businesses & nations who continue to trade in wild animal meats & those that have contaminated wet meat markets. We also require those same sanctions for those who participate in demonstrably cruel and harrowing livestock practices, both nationally and internationally. An example of this would be the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, an horribly cruel annual celebration held in Yulin and also the markets of Coronavirus (Covid-19) infamy in Wuhan.

Wet markets are distributed globally: Asia  62.6%, Europe 19.3%, North America 7.9%, Oceania 5.1%, Africa 3.1%  and South America 2.0%. The most frequently occurring illness syndrome among visitors to these wet markets was food poisoning, accounting for 54%  of diagnoses. Cases of this syndrome were identified in 56% of wet markets. Many markets are not culturally important or historical; the Yulan dog festival only started in 2009. There are much healthier, bio-secure markets of fresh veg and fruit that would improve the health and conditions of local people.

The 2020 coronavirus and 2003 SARS outbreak have two things in common: both most started in markets where appallingly treated animals & wild animals are butchered. Those 'wet' markets put people, live and dead animals, such as dogs, chickens, pigs, snakes, civets, bats and more, in constant close contact. That makes it easy for zoonotic diseases to jump from animals to humans. By improving awareness of animal welfare, we can improve bio-scrutiny & prevent further fatal viruses affecting global citizens.

Recent meat & dairy centered viruses also includes Corvid-19,EColi, BSE,Swine Flue,SAR-CoV.

By applying financial pressure we can begin a change, that betters the lives of animals and improves global bio-security.  Although this may seem a large endeavour, past trade sanctions have been very effective at breaking the cycle of life threatening zoonotic diseases, and evolving communities away from normalised animal violence. Recent history has shown success in these areas;  the decision made by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) could result in trade sanctions unless Japanese whalers stop hunting vulnerable  whales.

We therefore ask our government to consider carrying forward immediate sanctions against businesses & nations who continue to trade in wild animal meats & wet meat markets.
