The Issue

This petition seeks to modify the homework policy in the United States School District (USD) to eliminate nonessential assignments. Homework is a universal experience for most children and adolescents in the USA. A survey from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) estimates that an average high school student spends about seven hours per week on homework outside of school hours. While homework can reinforce what students learn in school, reduce screen time, and develop discipline, excessive homework can also lead to mental health issues like anxiety and burnout as stated by the American Psychological Association (APA). We are not proposing the eradication of all homework but rather a healthy balance. Ensuring a student's homework is relevant, meaningful, and necessary will not only reduce stress among students, but it could also improve the overall quality of education and student well-being. With this petition, we request that the USD School District reassess its homework requirements, eliminating any assignments that aren't necessary for advancing a student's education. Be the change and sign this petition now.
