My personal story reflects the plight of many in Connecticut. Each month, my EverSource electric bill includes an additional $200-300 for public benefits charges. This is not just my situation; it affects everyone in our state who uses EverSource for their electricity. EverSource is essentially the sole provider of light and power in Connecticut, and they take advantage of this monopoly by imposing extra charges, depleting our hard-earned money.

This hefty burden imposed on Connecticut's citizens is exorbitant and unjust. According to a study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as of 2019, the average monthly residential electricity bill in Connecticut was $127.33. With EverSource’s added public benefits charge, our bills exceed the national average by a significant margin. To make matters worse, our state already ranks among the top five states with the highest average electricity bills in the U.S.

Our cry for help is simple: The state of Connecticut and EverSource must reconsider this practice and act towards its elimination. Citizens deserve an energy provider that treats them fairly, rather than capitalizing on their lack of alternatives. It is the right time to raise our voices against this unfair practice.
