Eliminate the statute of limitations for adult abuse survivors - convict Sean Combs

The Issue

In the United States, the justice system prides itself on fairness and equity, yet for many adult survivors of sexual and physical abuse, justice remains elusive. The statute of limitations often serves as a barrier, preventing survivors from seeking the retribution they deserve. By extending or eliminating these limitations, and establishing a new civil look back window, we can afford survivors the opportunity to have their voices heard and their cases litigated.

A notable example is the incident in 2016 involving Sean Combs and Cassie Ventura. This case was captured on surveillance video and publicly reported. Despite the existence of such compelling evidence, many survivors find themselves legally silenced due to expired statutes of limitations. This showcases a fundamental imbalance within our legal framework that continues to shield offenders at the expense of the victimized.

Statistics from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) indicate that out of every 1,000 sexual assault cases, only 25 rapists will be incarcerated. A significant contributor to this alarming statistic is the restrictive time constraints survivors face in reporting their abuse. This limitation not only affects the availability of justice but also emboldens abusers who rely on these time barriers to evade legal consequences.

Numerous states have already introduced look back windows, allowing previously time-barred claims to be filed and heard. Yet, the inconsistencies between states lead to a patchwork of justice that further complicates the legal process for survivors. We need comprehensive federal legislation to ensure that such windows are available uniformly, so all survivors can exercise their right to seek justice, irrespective of where they reside.

Moreover, extending or eliminating statutes of limitations acknowledges the complex nature of trauma and the time it often takes for survivors to come forward. It provides an essential pathway for healing and accountability, both of which are crucial for personal and societal progress.

We urge policymakers to prioritize this crucial legislation. By signing this petition, we can collectively press for reform that signifies a true commitment to justice for all survivors, ensuring that neither time nor jurisdiction will silence them any longer. Sign this petition to make justice accessible, equitable, and unwavering in support of survivors everywhere.
