Eliminate the Securly Pass System for Fair Sanitary Practices in Schools
Eliminate the Securly Pass System for Fair Sanitary Practices in Schools
The Issue
I recall countless occasions where I, like many students, have found myself avoiding using the bathroom during school hours. Concerned with the accumulating timer of the Securly Pass System, it became a source of anxiety every time I stepped into the restroom. Adding to the distress was the unavoidable crowd that would form, creating an extended wait before being able to use the facilities. It became clear that this system isn't just a personal problem, but a wide-scale issue affecting students' basic human rights.
The Securly Pass System, designed to manage student bathroom use, has inadvertently generated new issues. Instead of fostering a conducive learning environment, it's causing unnecessary stress and even health issues in students who are afraid to use the restroom due to the time restraints imposed. Not only does this violate students’ rights to a safe and comfortable environment, but creates a potential health hazard.
Rationalizing this issue from a health perspective, the National Association for Continence has noted that delayed bathroom visits can cause severe physical disorders such as urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal problems, and kidney disease among others (National Association for Continence, 2017).
There is an immediate need for schools to eliminate the Securly Pass System and replace it with a more sympathetic, student-friendly approach. Our institutions should be nurturing environments, supportive of our physical and mental wellbeing. We, therefore, urge relevant authorities to reconsider this system for a constructive solution. Please, sign this petition to advocate for an environment that recognizes its students' basic rights.
