The Issue

I'm a student in the Beaverton School District who has always found it challenging to meet deadlines. Every time I hand in an assignment late, points are deducted, causing my grade to suffer. This has made me frustrated and stressed, not necessarily about the work itself, but about the fear of being penalized. If I were able to submit my work without the deduction penalty, my grades would reflect my actual understanding of the subject, not my organizational skills.

The current BSD policy that mandates point deductions for late submissions affects many students like me. This rule doesn't account for individual challenges, such as learning disabilities, mental health issues, or any unforeseen circumstances that may impede timely submission. This policy places unnecessary pressure on students and fails to recognize that learning is more important than adhering to strict deadlines. Plus, if I miss multiple days most teachers expect us to just do the work from home and get it submitted, but it isn't that easy.

Studies show that excessive focus on deadlines can hinder academic performance. According to the National Education Association, students learn best when they focus on mastery rather than being overwhelmed by penalty-driven goals. Implementing a more flexible approach to submission deadlines could significantly enhance our learning environment and better align assessments with real-world expectations.

A more supportive policy would help students focus on what matters most: their education and overall understanding of the material. Other schools have successfully adopted policies that provide students chances to submit work without immediate penalties, leading to higher levels of student engagement and success.

Let's work together to change this rule, fostering a more supportive and understanding environment that values learning and progress over perfectionism. By signing this petition, you're helping students like me to have their grades reflect their understanding and work done, not by a late fee.
