Eliminate the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in custody

Eliminate the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in custody
The Issue
As mandated by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 30, we implore the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, to act swiftly and comprehensively, ultimately ending the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in detention. Over the past ten years, the percentage of Indigenous inmates has climbed to 32%, despite several initiatives and significant expenditure. Older programs are frequently replaced by newer ones, with little to no financial increase or modification. Although they are positive measures, Bill C-75 and the money in the federal budget for 2024 are not enough on their own. To properly address systematic inequality, we call for comprehensive yearly progress reports, increased accountability, better programs and initiatives, as well as openness in justice efforts.
