Eliminate the Felony Box from Job Applications Following Prison Sentences

The Issue

As a seasoned social worker who spent a significant part of my career assisting individuals with substance use disorders, many of whom have criminal histories, the challenge they face upon returning to society is extremely personal to me. Currently working with public defenders, I've realized that the high rates of recidivism and relapse are primarily due to the lack of access to well-paying employment opportunities. The National Institute of Justice reports that almost 44% of released individuals return to prison within their first year of freedom. This alarming statistic is deeply connected with the fact that their criminal history severely limits their job prospects. Consequently, I am calling for the removal of the 'felony box' from all job applications. Once an individual has served their sentence, it does not make sense for their past to continue to be used against them in terms of employment. This change will offer them a fair chance to reintegrate into society, support themselves, and minimize the risk of returning to criminal behavior. If a person with a felony conviction can become president, all felony offenders should be able to secure gainful employment. Help create a more inclusive and empathetic society by signing this petition.
