The Issue

As of 2023, Solar Energy is the lowest cost electricity source worldwide, accounting already 6% of the globe's total electricity production. Solar power is very accessible to individuals, families and businesses due to lowering costs and ease of installation. There are currently 1 Million homes and business in Canada Powered from Solar electricity. This is impressive considering that there exists a steep import tax on solar panels. This is bizarre, considering there is very little solar module manufacturing in North America to support. There exists no flexible solar panel manufacturing in Canada.

Due to The Solar Anti-Dumping Tariff 8541.42.00.00, solar panels are currently taxed 165% in Canada upon entry from China, currently the world's largest solar module manufacturer, whom as a country produces 82% of the world's total capacity and this figure is rising YoY.

This tariff only serves to add thousands of dollars in unnecessary cost to a solar project. To provide context, the typical duty or tariff imposed in Canada is only 1.5% on subject goods.

By inflating the cost of solar panels by 2.7 times their actual cost, the government of Canada is lowering the adoption of renewable energy and creating economic barriers to accessing clean, renewable electricity.

Due to rapid inflation, the cost of energy in Canada has risen sharply in 2023 and will only continue to rise. Solar Panels are the most costly part of a solar installation. By reducing this tax, we will see a lower cost of solar electricity and further grow our burgeoning solar installation industry, whom already employs approx. 12,000 Canadians from coast, to coast to coast.

Edison Motors is a clean technology company based in Merritt BC. In 2023 we designed a solar powered refrigerated trailer prototype restricted by the Solar Anti-Dumping Tariff. Even when following the exemption, the CBSA still ruled to charge a duty of 165% without justification.

With your help, lets together reduce the cost of solar electricity for all Canadians; by asking the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), Minister of Environment & Climate Change and Minister of Canadian Natural Resources to replace the 172% anti-duping tariff with a more reasonable 1.5% standard tariff rate on solar panels which are CSA or UL certified.
