Eliminate Second Language Requirement for 11th and 12th Grades in CBSE

The Issue

As a current 10th grader, I am looking ahead to the next phase of my education with both excitement and trepidation. One aspect that causes me undue stress is the addition of a second language in grades 11 and 12 under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This requirement, while intended to broaden our horizons, often ends up being an unnecessary burden on students who are already grappling with numerous subjects.

Research shows that while learning a second language can be beneficial, it can also cause significant stress if not pursued willingly or out of interest. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, academic pressure is one of the leading causes of stress among students worldwide. Adding another complex subject like a second language only exacerbates this issue.

Moreover, many students find little practical use for these languages post-graduation unless they choose specific career paths or higher studies requiring them. Thus, this requirement seems more like an added strain rather than an enriching educational experience.

We propose that CBSE re-evaluates its decision for grades 11 and 12 and considers making second languages optional rather than mandatory. This change would allow students to focus on their core subjects without additional pressure from less relevant ones.

Please join us in urging CBSE to reconsider this policy for the betterment of student mental health and academic performance. Sign this petition today!
