The Issue
As a homeowner and a senior, I have spent a lifetime working hard, paying bills, and contributing to my community. Like many others, I've dreamt of the day when I could call my home truly my own, without the worries of financial burdens as I approach my golden years. Yet, even though my house is paid off, the looming threat of property taxes still hangs over me. It's not just I who feels this inequity, but countless other seniors and veterans who are facing the same undue stress.
In the United States, homeowners over the age of 62 should not have to continue bearing the financial strain of property taxes once their homes are fully paid off. We dedicated our lives to hard work, paid our taxes, and contributed to the growth and stability of this nation. It is unjust that, despite owning our homes outright, we are at risk of losing them due to an inability to pay continual taxes.
Statistics show that nearly 80% of seniors are on fixed incomes, which makes it even more difficult to manage unexpected expenses like increasing property taxes. Furthermore, many veterans who have served our country with honor also find themselves struggling to make ends meet in their retirement years. Our nation owes these brave individuals the security and peace of mind that comes with a tax-free home.
I propose that state legislatures enact policies to exempt homeowners over 62, who have fully paid off their homes, from paying property taxes. This will not only provide financial relief but also honor the contributions and sacrifices of our senior citizens and veterans. Several states have already taken steps towards this, setting a precedent for others to follow.
Let's come together to ensure that seniors can live out their retirement years without the fear of losing their homes. I urge lawmakers to take immediate action and reconsider current property tax policies that disproportionately affect our senior population.
Sign this petition to support a fair system that respects the rights and contributions of homeowners over 62. It’s time for change. Let’s protect our seniors and veterans from financial insecurity and stress. Please share this petition with your network and be part of a movement to bring about this vital change.
