Eliminate Property Tax on Registered Vehicles in Missouri

The Issue

I am a resident of Missouri, and like many others, I have been struggling with the financial burden of vehicle ownership. In these challenging times, it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to afford the necessary expenses associated with owning a car. One such expense is the property tax imposed on registered vehicles. This tax is an additional burden that many Missourians can no longer bear.

The problem has become so severe that some residents cannot even afford to get their plates renewed. This means they are unable to legally drive their vehicles - a necessity for most in our state for work, school, and daily life activities.

It's important to understand that we are not asking for freebies or handouts; we simply believe it's unfair to pay taxes on something we already own outright. Vehicle owners should not be penalized further by having to pay an annual property tax on top of all other costs associated with vehicle ownership.

According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average annual cost of owning and operating a new vehicle was $9,282 or $773.50 per month in 2019 (AAA). With this high cost already weighing heavily on car owners' budgets, adding property taxes into the mix only exacerbates financial stress.

We urge our state and city officials in Missouri to reconsider this policy and eliminate property taxes on registered vehicles. By doing so, they will be providing much-needed relief for thousands of Missourians who rely heavily upon their cars but struggle under this unnecessary financial strain.
