The Issue

I am a retired widow living in Kentucky. Having worked hard all my life, I was able to fully purchase my home and vehicle. However, I unexpectedly found myself paying property and vehicle taxes every year. I feel like I'm leasing - not owning - these things I worked so hard to acquire. This bothers me not only because it seems unfair but also because I believe it infringes on our constitutional rights. The current situations seem unjust, tantamount to forcing residents to pay to lease their own property. Additionally, these taxes put a heavy burden on our seniors and the economically disadvantaged who have paid off their properties. According to the Tax Foundation, property taxes in Kentucky averaged 0.83% in 2020, translating to an annual tax payment of over $1000 on a $150,000 home (Tax Foundation, 2020). This financial strain is unnecessary and oppressive, especially for those living on a fixed income. It's time to reconsider our tax laws and find a more equitable solution. We earnestly request the Kentucky State Legislature to review and eliminate yearly property and vehicle taxes. Make a stand and sign this petition for an adjustment in our taxation system that respects the rights of property owners.
