As a multi-racial women of America, I cherish our country's inherent value of freedom of speech and the right to express one's own identity without fear of harassment. These values should translate into our digital spaces as well. However, the frequent exposure to political, religious, and discriminatory content on TikTok endangers this cause, especially for our impressionable youths who spend a significant part of their day employed on the platform. Therefore, we call for a substantial regulation to ensure TikTok remains a tolerant and safe environment. 
In our society, we have rules and regulations that inhibit the discussion of politics, religion, and promotion of racism in places of education, workplaces, and public events. These rules exist to maintain peace, respect, and a harmonious environment. Boasting over one billion users globally, TikTok is a platform used predominantly by teenagers and young adults; a group highly susceptible to the influence of social media.
Strikingly, a report from Common Sense Media revealed that about 40% of U.S. teenagers felt disturbing videos on the site made them uncomfortable or anxious. Clearly, there is a pressing need for the platform to mirror society's standard rules. I believe it is crucial that we take steps to debar discussions related to politics, religion, promotion of racism, and discrimination on TikTok. This measure will help to keep the platform a safe and enjoyable space for everyone, rather than a breeding ground for division and harm. Let's uphold the primary purpose of TikTok for showcasing musical and artistic talents, not create a platform for spreading hate and divisiveness. Proactively endorse this cause.
