As a parent of four children, I find immense joy and comfort in spending time with my family outdoors in our beautiful community of Palos Verdes Estates. We love exploring the trails, playing in the open fields, and enjoying serenity in the ocean. However, the increasing use of pesticides in these public spaces deeply concerns me. It's not just about the immediate harm these chemicals can cause, but the long-term effects they can have on our children, wildlife, and the delicate ecosystem that thrives in and around our community.

Pesticides, often sprayed to maintain public greenery, can infiltrate our water systems, including the ocean. This runoff is not only a threat to marine life but also circles back into our lives as these waters are part of our recreational and natural environments. Studies have shown that pesticides can have devastating impacts on aquatic life and contribute to declining water quality. According to a 2020 report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pesticide contamination in water bodies can pose serious hazards to both humans and animals.

Our children deserve to play and grow in an environment free from toxic chemicals. Our local wildlife, including the birds, bees, and other pollinators, should not suffer because of chemical exposure. Many other  nearby cities including Malibu, Laguna Beach, Irvine, Manhattan Beach, San Clemente, Encinitas to name a few, have successfully implemented pesticide-free practices and have managed to maintain their public spaces without them, showcasing it is both a feasible and beneficial approach. 

We urge the Palos Verdes Estates city council to re-evaluate their current policies on pesticide usage, consider alternatives such as organic landscaping methods, and prioritize the health and safety of our community. By eliminating pesticides, we not only protect our children and the environment but also promote a healthier future for all residents.
