Eliminate Mandatory Study Hall from Our School

The Issue

As a student from our school, I witnessed firsthand how the pressure of maintaining good grades can be challenging. Just last quarter, I had to raise my underperforming 2.50 Grade Point Average (GPA) to a more respectable 3.17 in the final week. This experience taught me not only the importance of academic recovery but also the potential we have to change our situation in a limited period. Therefore, I believe that if students are not concerned about their grades, the educational institution should not emphasize our marks to such an extent.

Our school's study hall is a primary source of this pressure. It fosters an environment where grades are seen as a measure of our worth and intelligence, rather than our learning process. National surveys consistently indicate a negative correlation between academic stress and school engagement, a fact exemplified by our school's study hall setting (American Psychological Association, 2013).

Considering these facts, I urge our school to remove the mandatory study hall from our daily schedule. Such a step would mark a shift from a grade-oriented education system to a learning-focused model, creating a balanced academic environment we aspire to have. Please sign this petition to reduce academic stress and promote a more positive learning atmosphere.
