Eliminate Mandatory Membean Use in Broomfield Heights Middle School

The Issue

In case you havent heard, at Broomfield Heights Middle School every single 7th and 8th grader is being forced to do Membean for the first 20 minutes of acedemic lab. I think I speak for everyone in 7th and 8th grade, when I say that we are burdened by the unnecessary requirement of using Membean, a vocabulary software, during our study hall time. This is despite the fact that each English Language Arts (ELA) teachers have their own vocabulary tests for their respective classes. The use of Membean in our study hall time is redundant and takes away valuable time that could be used to complete homework for other classes.

To add on, Acidemic Lab is now WIN (Whatever You Need). To our understanding, this rule was imposed because students were complaining that some WIN teachers made them do Membean, and some did not. This is not only ridiculous but completely undermines what the goal of WIN is. From what our WIN teachers have said to us, people were put in WIN classes based on their skill level in reading in math, as a means to help us in areas where we struggle. That was the whole reason that some classes had to do Membean and some did not; it was just about supporting kids who needed extra guidance. By making every 8th grader do Membean, the school is eliminating some complaints, but at what cost?

Additionally, the 8th-grade curriculum at our school often results in up to two hours of homework per night. Given this heavy workload, it would be far more beneficial for students to WIN for completing these assignments rather than spending it on unneeded vocabulary software.

We understand the importance of enhancing our vocabulary skills but believe that this can be achieved through the existing ELA class structure without imposing additional requirements during study hall. We urge the administration at Broomfield Heights Middle School to reconsider this policy and allow students to utilize their study hall time more effectively.
