Many of my friends worldwide are very uncomfortable with recent trends requiring identification to access online content. We all strongly agree that this is a violation of privacy and are deeply concerned about the potential consequences of data leaks. Mandatory identification not only infringes upon personal privacy but also exposes individuals to risks when their private information is stored online.

In an age where digital experiences shape so much of our lives, it’s crucial to safeguard our privacy and personal information. Currently, identification is increasingly being demanded by websites and platforms as a prerequisite to access content, register on platforms, or even simply browse. This request for identification often includes sensitive personal information that, once online, is vulnerable to unauthorized access and data breaches. According to a 2021 report by Risk Based Security, over 28 billion records were exposed just in that year due to data breaches.

Requiring identification discriminates against those who are uncomfortable sharing personal information online and also sets a dangerous precedent for digital surveillance. It inherently ties online identity with real-world identity, which should remain distinct to preserve anonymity and freedom of expression.

To address this issue, we urge internet platforms, legislative bodies, and policymakers to reconsider and eliminate the requirement for identification to access online content. Alternatively, develop robust systems that do not store sensitive information or use anonymous credentials that protect users' identities.
