Eliminate homework for elementary schools, and limit it heavily for high school
The Issue
Dear School Administrators and Educators,
We, the concerned students, urge you to eliminate homework for elementary schools and limit it heavily for high school. Homework has been a long-standing tradition in education, but recent studies have shown that it may not be as effective as we once thought.
According to a study by the University of Tennessee, homework in elementary school does not improve academic performance significantly. In fact, too much homework can lead to stress and anxiety among young children. Furthermore, many parents are unable to help their children with homework due to language barriers or lack of time.
For high school students, excessive amounts of homework can also lead to stress and sleep deprivation. A survey by the American Psychological Association found that teenagers who spend more than two hours on homework per night experience more health problems such as headaches and stomachaches.
We believe that instead of assigning busy work at home, teachers should focus on providing quality instruction during class time. This will allow students to fully engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed outside of school hours.
Therefore, we ask that you consider eliminating or heavily limiting homework for elementary schools and high schools. Let us prioritize our children's mental health while still ensuring they receive a quality education.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Blake Moe, Wyatt Tyler, Bruno Miller, and Charles Koupal
