Eliminate gmt for more evening daylight

The Issue

Every autumn as we revert to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), I alongside many others like me are battling the debilitating impact of seasonal depression. The increasing darkness in the late afternoon is not only an inconvenience for me, but it affects many peoples mental health significantly. Many people require more daylight in the evening to ensure our mental health and keep our minds clear.

Having more daylight in the evenings also impacts the environment in a positive way. The usage of artificial lighting for an extended period of time not only uses a lot of energy which is harmful to the environment, but increases depression. Natural lighting promotes good mental wellbeing and physical health as people are more inclined to go outside.

Many countries have opted for more daylight saving measures year round to better suit the needs of their citizens. Therefore, the United Kingdom should also consider the abolishment of GMT and sticking to British Summer Time (BST) throughout the year. Our society functions day and night, with many of us outside in the afternoon be it commuting, leaving work or hanging out with friends and family. People will be more inclined to do so with more lighting and will feel safer doing so rather than being in the dark.

This change not only benefits people like me who suffer from seasonal depression at this time of year, but also promotes a healthier and more energetic lifestyle for communities. This practice of daylight keeping fits the evolving nature of our society, which ensures a more productive and environmentally friendly future.
