Eliminate funding for Project 2025's detransition studies

The Issue

GOP candidate for governor of Tennessee wants to execute the parents of trans kids: https://www.thepinknews.com/2026/01/30/monty-fritts-gop-candidate-governor-trans-kids/

Major medical orgs partially U-turn on trans surgeries – here’s what they said (pseudoscience by TERFS and right-wing extremists): https://www.thepinknews.com/2026/02/05/trans-surgeries-american-medical-association-ama-american-society-of-plastic-surgeons-asps/

The White House has ordered the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct studies on the regret rates of transgender individuals who have received gender-affirming care. This directive is part of an initiative called Project 2025, which, among other things, inaccurately labels such vital medical care as "surgical mutilation." This move undermines the significant and positive impacts that gender-affirming care has on the well-being of trans individuals, and it perpetuates harmful misconceptions about transgender people.

The decision to channel resources into studying "detransition," a phenomenon that is statistically rare, diverts attention and funding away from critical issues that need immediate attention. According to reputable studies, the vast majority of transgender individuals who undergo gender-affirming procedures do not regret their decision, and these procedures significantly improve their quality of life, mental health, and societal integration.

Furthermore, under recent administrative decisions, access for trans individuals to essential services and rights, such as obtaining passports that accurately represent their gender identity, has been severely restricted. The elimination of the option to use an X marker, instead of being limited to male or female gender markers, is a step backward in the fight for equality. Moreover, the Pentagon's swift reversal of policies supporting transgender service members is a disheartening regression from progress made in recent years.

Filing studies like those mandated under Project 2025 can foster discrimination, bolster transphobic agendas, and marginalize an already vulnerable community. This petition calls for the reallocation of funds from these studies towards supporting comprehensive healthcare, educational programs, and policies that affirm the identities and rights of transgender individuals.

Join us in demanding that the U.S. government redirect its efforts towards empowering the transgender community rather than marginalizing them. By signing this petition, you support equitable healthcare access and the upholding of human rights for all, regardless of gender identity or expression. Let's stand together for a future that respects and acknowledges the dignity of every individual. Sign now to make your voice heard.
