Eliminate Front License Plates in Ontario

The Issue

Dear Minister Mulroney,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the requirement for front license plates on vehicles in Ontario be eliminated. The current requirement for front license plates is outdated and unnecessary, especially considering the availability of new technologies that make them redundant.

Many other provinces and states have already eliminated the requirement for front license plates, including Alberta, British Columbia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Studies have shown that this change has not had any negative impact on law enforcement or public safety. In fact, new technologies such as automatic license plate recognition systems are making front license plates redundant.

Eliminating the requirement for front license plates would also have significant aesthetic benefits. Many drivers find that front license plates detract from the appearance of their vehicles, and removing them would allow for a cleaner, sleeker look.

Moreover, requiring front license plates may cause un-necessary damage to bumpers. In a recent study conducted by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, it was found that front license plates can increase the risk of damage in low-speed collisions. The study also found that license plate frames can exacerbate the problem by acting as a lever that increases the forces on the plate and the vehicle.

Removing front license plates would not only reduce the risk of damage but also eliminate the need for drivers to purchase and install a special bracket or holder for the front plate, which can be an unnecessary expense.

Furthermore, eliminating the requirement for front license plates could have environmental benefits. The removal of the front license plate would reduce the amount of materials used in the production and distribution of license plates, reducing the overall environmental impact.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation conducted a survey in 2019 to gather public opinion on the requirement for front license plates in Ontario. Of the 28,000 respondents, over 70% indicated that they would prefer not to have a front license plate on their vehicles. These drivers cited concerns with aesthetics, the impact on airflow and cooling, and the risk of damage in low-speed collisions.

Eliminating the requirement for front license plates would bring several benefits to the people of Ontario, including improved aesthetics, reduced costs, increased driver satisfaction, and potential environmental benefits. We urge you to consider this change and take action to implement it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
