Eliminate Felony Conviction Disclosure Requirement from Job and Housing Applications

Eliminate Felony Conviction Disclosure Requirement from Job and Housing Applications
The Issue
As the founder of a non-profit aimed at fostering equality, I've seen first-hand how the requirement to disclose felony convictions on job and housing applications can serve as an insurmountable barrier for those seeking to turn around their life post-conviction. Everyone deserves a second chance, a shot at a fresh start - but this requirement often deprives people of these important opportunities.
An estimated 70 million Americans have a criminal record, and they are all expected to check 'the box' on job applications, immediately lessening their chances of employment. It has been estimated that employment barriers faced by people with felony convictions, such as 'the box', cost the U.S. economy between $78 and $87 billion in annual GDP. Moreover, access to secure housing is a fundamental need, yet one that is often denied to individuals with a felony conviction.
We are urging lawmakers to rethink this policy. Reforming the job and housing application process to make it fairer for everyone is a significant step towards true social equality. From a societal perspective, these changes could greatly contribute to reducing recidivism rates and strengthen our economy.
We believe in empowerment, rehabilitation and the innate potential for everyone to make a positive contribution to society. It's high time we reflect these ideals in our employment and housing laws too. Please, join our campaign and sign this petition. Let's fight for equal rights, justice, and opportunities for everyone, regardless of their past mistakes.
