Eliminate Corruption at West African Land Borders

The Issue

Inspired by my personal desire for a better Nigeria, a better West Africa, a better Africa, and indeed, a better world, I raise this urgent issue on corruption prevalent at the West African land borders, especially Lagos-Seme border. For far too long, the Nigerian side of this border has been known for its notorious corrupt practices. It is unthinkable that there are over 30 checkpoints within only 3-5 kilometres on the Nigerian side, where every 50 meters, a commuter is forced to stop and pay one government agent or another.

This malpractice extends beyond this border. Immigrants also bear the brunt of exploitation by immigration officials on Benin, Togo and Ghana borders, who demand payments before stamping passports. It is noteworthy that these actions are negatively affecting commuters and the general ease of doing business in the region, causing untold hardship and frustrruations.

As we enter the year 2025, we must do better. We owe it to ourselves, our generation and generations to come to ensure that our borders are free of corruption. The time to act is now, not only to achieve a corruption-free Nigeria but also to set a precedent for a better West Africa, a better Africa, and a better world. For this to be achieved, we need to raise our voices against this ongoing atrocity.

Let's come together and demand an immediate end to this corrupt practice. Your signature on this petition can help push for an urgent reformation of our border policies and checks, ensuring that they become corruption-free and commuter-friendly.
