The current education system in British Columbia incorporates learning objectives referred to as core competencies. These competencies, including communication, thinking, and personal and social competencies, have become a focus in schools throughout the province. However, there is growing concern among the students about the effectiveness of this approach.

Furthermore, core competencies put an extreme emphasis on social and emotional areas, which may dilute the academic rigor or fail to prepare students adequately for their future careers. By removing the core competencies from the curriculum, schools can refocus on academic subjects in the traditional sense, providing a more balanced education.
