Eliminate Computer Usage in Classrooms, Revert to Traditional Pen and Paper Learning

Eliminate Computer Usage in Classrooms, Revert to Traditional Pen and Paper Learning
The Issue
As a concerned parent in Henderson, NV, I have seen firsthand the negative impact of excessive computer usage in our classrooms. My child's achievements have dropped significantly since joining the school district where computers are the main form of classroom instruction. This over-reliance on technology hinders their learning capabilities and induces unnecessary stress and anxiety.
Computers can be unreliable; programs often fail to load or save work properly. The need for constant Internet connection adds another layer of complexity and potential failure points. Furthermore, most of the computer's functions are locked or blocked by the school district, limiting their usefulness as educational tools.
While technology can enhance education when used appropriately for research and drafting papers, it should not replace traditional pen-and-paper methods that have proven effective over centuries. A study by Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) found that students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than those who took notes longhand.
This is not an isolated issue; many parents share my concerns and also face stress and anxiety due to this shift towards digital learning. A study from Stanford University found that students who used computers extensively in their classes showed no significant benefits compared to those who used them less (Stanford University Study on Technology in Education).
Furthermore, there is growing evidence that prolonged screen use can lead to health problems such as headaches and vision issues. In a study done by Professor Bourne at the Vision and Eye Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University, suggests that around half the global population is expected to have myopia by 2050 due to the fact that our children are spending more time looking at screens for long periods due to constant computer use.
We propose a return to traditional pen-and-paper methods with computers being used only for research and drafting papers - a balanced approach that combines modern technology with proven teaching methods.
Our children deserve an education system that puts their needs first rather than relying heavily on potentially disruptive technology. Putting our children's mental and physical health at risk. Let us ensure they receive quality education devoid of unnecessary technological complications.
Please sign this petition if you believe we should eliminate excessive computer usage from our classrooms and revert back to traditional teaching methods.
