Eliminate breaststroke from swimming competitions
The Issue
Growing up, swimming was always a part of my life, and like many, I have my strengths and weaknesses in the pool. However, the breaststroke has consistently been a challenge for me. Despite my efforts to improve, I find it frustrating and demotivating, not just because I personally struggle with it, but also because it seems to be an unnecessarily cumbersome stroke for many swimmers.
Breaststroke's design can be troublesome even for seasoned swimmers. It relies heavily on very specific muscle coordination, timing, and technique which can be far less intuitive than other strokes. This often leads to injuries, such as knee strain and hip pain, affecting not just me, but countless others who partake in swimming at all levels.
Beyond personal struggle, data from various swim clubs and organizations indicate that breaststroke is consistently the least favored stroke among swimmers and coaches. In a poll conducted by Swim England, 45% of swimmers indicated breaststroke as the most challenging stroke. Its complexity can discourage participation and hinder the enjoyment of swimming for many.
Swimming should be an inclusive sport that promotes fitness, confidence, and joy. Removing or revising breaststroke could lead to a more accessible and enjoyable swimming environment for everyone. This isn't about removing tradition, but about evolving the sport to be more inclusive and enjoyable.
Join me in calling for the reevaluation of the necessity of breaststroke in swimming competitions. Sign this petition and help make swimming a more welcoming and less frustrating sport for all.
