Eliminate Blood Quantum Requirements for Native Americans

Eliminate Blood Quantum Requirements for Native Americans
The Issue
My wife, a proud Native American, and many of her family members have been tragically denied tribal membership due to an outdated and oppressive blood quantum requirement. Despite her clear lineage, visible heritage, and parents who were also Native, the 95 percent blood quantum benchmark bars her from being recognized by her own tribe. This injustice runs deep, severing an ancient cultural connection and undermining the very essence of Native identity.
The blood quantum standard was introduced over 150 years ago as a colonial tool to dilute Native American heritage and break tribal bonds. Today, it continues to function as a weapon of cultural erasure, contradicting the rich diversity of Native heritage. This requirement fractures families, stripping people of their rightful identity and heritage simply because they don't meet an arbitrary blood percentage.
The notion that a percentage of blood can define cultural identity is deeply flawed. Heritage cannot be quantified by fractions or percentages. Native American identity is about culture, community, and a shared history, not a mathematical equation. Denying people their rightful place in their community based on blood quantum disregards the cultural richness and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a tribe.
Let us advocate for a system that acknowledges and honors Native American heritage as a living, breathing culture. We must push for policies that include all individuals of Native descent who have documented proof of their heritage, regardless of arbitrary blood measurements. It is time to eliminate the blood quantum requirement entirely and adopt more inclusive methods for recognizing Native American identity.
By removing this antiquated standard, we honor the resilience of Native heritage and preserve the diverse mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions that define Native communities. We call on tribal leaders and federal lawmakers to revise these harmful policies and implement systems that honor and reflect true Native identity.
Sign this petition to stand against the destruction of Native American culture through blood quantum. Let's unite to protect and preserve the future of our Native communities for generations to come.
