Eliminate black plastic food take out containers
The Issue
Food, health, and the environment are intricately interwoven. Black plastic food takeout containers wreak havoc on our environment and pose significant health risks to our vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.
Black plastic is particularly harmful because components from recycled electronic waste have been detected in food containers. A landmark study found that these containers introduce restricted heavy metals and toxic flame retardants directly into food packaging. These compounds act as severe endocrine disruptors that leach into hot food and accumulate in our bodies. High heat causes these plastic containers to shed thousands of microplastics directly into hot food and accumulate in our bodies.
While many assume these containers are recycled, the reality is that optical sensors at recycling facilities cannot detect black plastic. This means 100% of it is sent straight to landfills or incinerators, where it releases toxic components into our air, land, and water. According to the EPA, we generate an estimated 35 million tons of plastic waste annually, and black plastic is a major contributor to this crisis.
Massachusetts communities like Brookline, Hudson, Needham, and Pembroke have already successfully banned black plastic locally.
It’s Time for Medford to Lead!
By signing this petition, we urge Medford's local policymakers and community leaders to:
- Pass a city-wide ordinance banning the use of black plastic food takeout containers.
- Support local restaurants in transitioning to certified compostable, aluminum, or clear/white recyclable alternatives.
- Protect our health and environment.
