Eliminate additional parking fees for apartment residents

The Issue

In recent times,  Wilmington College residents, have been faced with the unfair imposition of additional parking fees despite already paying substantial housing fees. This practice is not only financially burdensome but also seems unjust given that parking should be considered a fundamental amenity for residents.

For many of us, owning a vehicle is not a luxury but a necessity. We use our cars to commute to work and run essential errands. Having to pay extra just to park our cars where we reside feels like an undue financial strain on top of the already high cost of living.

Landlords often argue that parking spaces are in high demand or that the fees help maintain these areas. But in many cases, the cost of maintaining a parking space is already offset by the general fees residents pay. A study by the National Multifamily Housing Council shows that a significant portion of housing fees goes towards the upkeep of such facilities. Thus, the argument for an extra charge is unfounded.

We propose that landlords integrate parking fees into the general housing fees. This integration would not only offer transparency concerning residents' financial obligations but would also ensure fairness, allowing residents to accurately assess their housing costs without unexpected charges.

We urge housing authorities and regulatory bodies to look into this matter, ensuring that residents are not unfairly charged for parking. It is time to change the policy and make every resident's right to park free from additional fees.

Sign this petition to demand that our housing fees should include parking facilities, ensuring a fair and equitable living arrangement for all residents.
