I started this petition as I was offended by a question on the OKCupid website.
Since then, thousands of you have shown your support and the petition has gained lots of media attention.
OKCupid responded to us with this statement:
"‘Questions range from mundane to provocative and they specifically allow you to determine your potential compatibility with someone else and to avoid people whose viewpoints you strongly disagree with.’
The argument is that it is OK to ask offensive and discriminatory questions if it helps people find a better date. I disagree. Attitudes towards people with a learning disability have improved a lot during the course of my life, but we still have a long way to go. I think it’s dangerous to suggest that people with a learning disability should not have families.
Last week I wrote to Mike Maxim who is the Chief Executive of OKCupid. I told him that I had seen their response but did not accept it. I said I, and thousands of others, still wanted to see the question removed and for him to give an apology for the offence it has caused.
So far he has not replied to my letter.
Please keep sharing the petition and thank you for all of your support.
