Elevate Appreciation and Awareness of Reunion Island's Unique Attributes

The issue

From my personal experiences and love for Reunion Island, I have consistently felt a pressing need to increase understanding and appreciation for this remarkably unique paradise. There is no place on earth like Reunion Island. It cradles an astonishing spectrum of biodiversity, ranging from a lush rainforest to lava-spitting volcanoes, inclusive in its 2,512 square kilometers.

Reunion Island is the only island in the world to hold two UNESCO World Heritage site titles. This includes its historical significance in regards to the Route of Slaves and its revolutionary landscapes, embracing Cirques of Mafate, Salazie, and Cilaos. However, despite these global recognitions, appreciation on a global scale falls woefully short, reducing the island to a mere speck on the world map.

The island is home to a rich cultural mosaic, with diversity stemming from various ethnicities harmoniously co-existing and creating a culture as unique as the island itself. Yet, the irreplaceable and vital traditions of the local inhabitants are at risk of being overlooked.

The longevity and recognition of the Reunion's distinct culture, history, and biogeography are of utmost importance. Locally and globally, this should be seen as a shared responsibility. If such a mesmerizing place, abundant in natural beauty and distinct culture, can go largely underappreciated, then we risk closing our eyes to the diversity that makes our world so compelling.

Let us stand together to enhance the appreciation and awareness of Reunion Island. Let us spread knowledge about its unique attributes, unique culture, and the importance of appreciating such places of unparalleled diversity. It's time we all appreciated Reunion Island for the rare jewel that it truly is. I hope you sign this petition and give Reunion Island the recognition it rightfully deserves.

Reunion Island is my favourite place on the Earth, because of its underrated landscape and people. If you've only just heard of Reunion, please take a stand and sign this petition!
