Refund funds taken and eHarmony to change their auto-renewal policy

The issue

eHarmony has refused to refund a subscription fee of $239 taken based on a line item in a terms and conditions contract that defaults all agreements to auto renewal. No notice prior to the withdrawal of funds was provided. No notice was provided to alert me to the subscription period expiring soon.

It is not fair or reasonable to take money from a customer without any prior notice. Companies should not be able to continue to withdraw money from people on this premise of auto-renewal without giving them prior notice their subscription is going to expire soon and giving them the opportunity to address it before your funds are taken from you.

They hide behind clauses in a terms and conditions contract that is pretty unreasonable to expect people to read in detail. People like myself, don't realize what we're signing up for and a year down the track to just take someone's money is unfair and unreasonable.

As consumers, we need to take a stand against these unfair practices! Can you imagine how many people they have done this to who just let it go! But if we continue to let this go they wont change their policy and take advantage and keep our money.

The basic fact is this - If I had known it was going to auto renew I would have logged onto the system and addressed this but I didn't know. The only notification I received was from paypal letting me know $239 had just been withdrawn from my account. I haven't used eHarmony for at least 10 months and had completely forgotten about it - now I'm expected to pay another $239 for a service I don't want or need?! Their response to my request for a refund was that I was not entitled to a refund and sent me a link to their terms and conditions! Thats it. http://www.eharmony.com.au/about/terms/#13

Many companies now will send you an automated reminder via email or text, letting you know your subscription is about to expire and letting you know if you do nothing it will automatically renew. This is reasonable and fair business practice. The companies that don't do this, like eHarmony, don't do it because they know very well people either don't know what they're signing up for, or if they haven't used it in a while simply forget so they get to keep your money for nothing. It is not acceptable and they should be made to change their policy. Most people cant be bothered fighting back and accept the loss of $239 but I have had enough of companies taking advantage of people.

Please help me by signing my petition to demand a refund and force eHarmony to change their auto renewal policy so they don't continue to take people's money with proper notice. Let them know that as a consumer, you expect to be treated fairly and reasonably.
