Fadi Shalo started this petition to EFC Midwood Corners LLC

On February 18th, EFC Midwood Corners LLC sent a notice to Cloudzilla, a mom and pop’s smoke shop in Plaza Midwood, stating that they would no longer be accepting their rental payments and that they would be proceeding with eviction soon. Cloudzilla’s owner Fadi Shalo, or Franky as he is better known in the neighborhood, has been operating Cloudzilla on 1711 Central Avenue for the last 3 years. Immigrating from Jerusalem in 2011, he has been a prime example of the American dream, building his business from scratch and being a law-abiding citizen and father of three beautiful children. Unfortunately his livelihood is now at risk as EFC Midwood Corners LLC attempts to evict him in the midst of a global pandemic with little regard to the repercussions on small business owners or their families.

EFC Midwood Corners LLC’s actions seem to contribute to a larger worrying trend we have recently seen in the Charlotte area: An aggressive campaign of gentrification in Plaza Midwood that would kick mostly residents and tenants of color to the curb in the name of “development” for wealthy investors.

Cloudzilla has become a staple in the Plaza Midwood community, with customers returning again and again due to Franky’s unique humor and genuine charm. Franky has built his business not through sales, but through forging relationships in the community. From donating to local non-profits to employing locals struggling to make ends meet, Franky has made it a top priority to give back to a community that has given so much to him.

If you know Franky, you know that he won’t give up without a fight. We have been trying to reach out to EFC Midwood Corners LLC to negotiate with them and come to equitable solutions, but they won’t talk to us. Instead they would rather bully us with eviction notices and expensive legal maneuvers.

Franky will do ever thing in his power to remain in Plaza Midwood, where he is loved and respected. He has always stood with the community, now it is time for the community to stand with him. Join us in urging EFC Midwood Corners LLC to allow Franky to continue operating his business and life. Keeping a small business afloat during COVID is tough enough as it is. Enough is enough! Help Franky stay in our neighborhood!
