Education Secretary: Support schools in meeting disability accommodation needs

Education Secretary: Support schools in meeting disability accommodation needs
The Issue
This week, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a unanimous victory for a teenage girl with epilepsy—and for all students with disabilities across the country.
The ruling makes it clear: schools must provide meaningful, reasonable accommodations, and they can no longer hide behind unfair legal standards that make it nearly impossible for families to hold them accountable.
For us, parents, what should happen next is clear:
Now it’s time for the Department of Education to step up—not just with oversight, but with real support for schools and educators.
We’re calling on Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to:
- Expand federal funding and technical assistance to help school districts meet their legal obligations to students with disabilities
- Launch national training programs for school administrators and teachers on disability rights, IEPs, and reasonable accommodations
- Create a clear public toolkit for families and educators navigating disability support plans—so no one falls through the cracks
- Ensure robust federal enforcement so districts that fall short face consequences—not just families
This Supreme Court decision is a win—but it’s only the beginning. Schools need support to do the right thing, and families need to know their children won’t be left behind.
