A recent, terrifying incident involving a family and a poor coyote who was killed has driven me to pen this petition to urge this community to take significant and informed steps in addressing wildlife encounters in Southern California. A four-year-old child was bitten by a coyote while they in the driveway, a moment that no parent should ever have to endure. Thankfully, the child is recovering, but this has brought to light critical issues regarding wildlife management and public education.

In the aftermath, the coyote that attacked the boy was killed. The coyote was cruelly trapped, killed, and dissected.  This was cruel and unnecessary.  The child may feel bad and the coyote will be grieved by their family. 

The same week, a wolf who bit a woman in Germany was rescued instead of killed.

Killing does not address the root of the problem. Coyotes are highly adaptable animals; when one is removed, another will likely take their place. This can lead to a cycle of more widows and orphans among the coyote population, not to mention additional grief for local residents, human and coyote.

The core issue here is human behavior, particularly people feeding wildlife, either inadvertently or intentionally. Feeding wild animals encourages them to lose their natural fear of humans, leading to more frequent and dangerous encounters. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, feeding wildlife disrupts natural processes and contributes significantly to human-wildlife conflict.

We need to focus on educating our community about the dangers and consequences of feeding wildlife. This includes public campaigns that inform residents on how to protect themselves and their families and how to keep our wildlife at a safe and respectful distance. Additionally, implementing stricter regulations and penalties for those caught feeding wild animals can significantly reduce the number of these unfortunate encounters.

While some residents might view these wild creatures as a threat, it’s crucial to remember that they are an integral part of our ecosystem. We must learn to coexist responsibly, ensuring safety for both our community and the wildlife that surrounds us.
