I am calling for a change in the UK Medical Curriculum to include Auto-immune anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, a disease which often presents as mental health.
***PLEASE SHARE & MAKE SURE YOU'RE FRIENDS/FAMILY ARE AWARE ***
This should be included in the Medical Curriculum for the following reasons;
A - To prevent young people being misdiagnosed
B - To prevent patients ending up in Mental Health Institutions
C- To take the pressure of our Mental Health Care Services
D - To save the NHS money
E - It is easily treated, using standard inexpensive medications, that are already widely available on the NHS.
F - ..and the disease is generally reversible with a good prognosis.
It is within everyone’s interest to sign this petition; This disease is not discriminatory. Please sign this for yourself and to ensure the health of your own friends and family.
Auto-immune Anti- NMDA Receptor Encephalitis often presents as mental health conditions, such as bipolar or schizophrenia. They look the same, but it’s not being taught within the doctor’s curriculum, therefore healthcare professionals are failing to recognise it.
We are currently being supported by the International Autoimmune Encephalitis society. However, at present this is not a ‘known’ disease and is often dismissed due to a ‘non’ infectious process…..Autoimmune doesn’t have an infectious process.
In medical document's the disease is still labelled as ‘Rare’. However, I have previous seen this after a family member contracted the disease back in 2005. Through research and help from the Encephalitis Society, amongst others, it is clear this is no longer a rare disease and in actual fact, it is on the increase and becoming quite common.
NMDA Receptor Encephalitis is easily treated, with non – expensive, readily available medications on the NHS and is known to be reversible with a good prognosis. However, if left untreated, the consequences are life-threatening.
NMDA Receptor Encephalitis patients are often sent home, as anti-psychotics medicines mask the disease. If it is not caught and/or treated in time it can reach the acute stage. - Acute stages autoimmune encephalitis video (warning can be upsetting).
With any fairly new disease it does take time for people to recognise and learn. It is not an isolated issue with the NHS , Private sector or UK Government. Globally it is not being recognised and we need to start taking action to learn and create awareness.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my petition and I hope you take on board what I have said for the sake your health and equally the health of others
