Don't Derail the Valley West LRT!!
The Issue
The Valley Line West is a city-building project a decade in the making. It will provide a mass transit connection from the west end of the City to downtown, connecting West Edmonton Mall, the Misericordia Hospital, and redevelopment sites like Jasper Gates and the West Block. The City has all its ducks in a row to begin procurement and then have construction start by the end of 2020.
However, some random people are trying to thwart this project. On November 13, 2019, the "Stop Valley West LRT" Petition was started by "Concerned Edmontonian." Who the hell is that? On December 9, 2019, the petition had 20 signatures and the Journal wrote a story about it. How the hell is that news? A councillor is trying to re-examine this project, which the City has already spent billions of dollars on planning, expropriating land, and building the other half of this line. Why the hell can't we just build it?
Reasons this project should be STARTED as soon as humanly possible:
- $$$! in stagnating economic conditions, borrowing and construction costs can be lower. The City has already spent a bunch of money on this. Although provincial govt funding has been delayed, backing out now means that the province may never provide the funds. WE MUST PUSH ONWARDS AND UPWARDS.
- Great design; the Valley Line will provide a quick route from downtown to the West End. 50 years from now, commutes by car will only take longer because, as our sprawling city continues to grow, there will be more cars on the road. Building LRT now means we have a faster alternative in the future.
- Track record - the Valley Line is already spurring new development! This new development is more sustainable because it allows people to rely less on cars and live in denser communities with transit/amenities nearby. Diversifying our housing stock is a great way to ensure that Edmontonians, young and old, have real choice when trying to find a place to live.
BUILD this PLEASE!!! Notable local miser David Staples thought we should build it BUT THEN he changed his mind lol. SIGN AND SHARE IF YOU THINK WE SHOULD GET THE JOB DONE.
