Edmontonians calling for the resignation of city council members
The Issue
Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, along with councillors Keren Tang, Andrew Knack, Jo-Anne Wright, Aaron Paquette and Ashley Salvador all voted the same way more than three-quarters of the time across all pairings, and were each on the winning side of those votes more than 84 per cent of the time.
Their reckless monetary decisions during a time of financial uncertainty when inflation and interest rates are at a generational high, housing costs and homelessness are skyrocketing, and crime rates are unmanageable, is irresponsible and not in the best interests of Edmontonians.
The Blatchford community project currently costs taxpayers 2 million per constructed home, and is behind schedule. At the point when it was expected to have 2750 completed homes, there were only 45 homes complete. These houses are priced $300,000 higher than comparable houses in other areas of Edmonton, hardly an answer to the housing affordability issue.
LRT Millwoods expansion was poorly designed and poorly developed. Cost $1.8 billion and caused significant traffic concerns. Built at street level, without crossing controls, created multiple train-vehicle collisions. It was originally set to open in 2019 but due to poor workmanship and poor management, and poor planning, didn't open until November 2023 and still caused accidends with vehicles after opening.
LRT West expansion will cost $2.67 billion if it goes according to plan and has the same development flaws as the Millwoods expansion.
In December 2022, as inflation was skyrocketing and interest rates were at an all time high, city council voted 8-5 rejecting a plan to cut costs of the Lewis Farms Rec center from $311 million to $185 million. This would have saved taxpayers $126 million in a time of financial uncertainty.
City council also voted to increase the budget for the new velodrome project by $46 million due to the rising cost of material in August 2020.
Council voted not to increase the police budget in 2021 to cater to the "defund the police" movement. This resulted in a significant raise in property and violent crime to a now unmanageable level.
2024 will mark the start of construction of Warehouse park, a greenspace that will close a portion of 107 street, further congesting downtown traffic to create a park that is mere minutes from one of the largest urban green spaces in Canada. This space could be used more effectively, and not cost Edmontonians $40 million.
In 2023 Councilors voted to increase Property tax by 6.6% to cover their irresponsible spending. They vote to provide unnecessary services that can be provided by the private sector instead of increase Essential services such as policing, road repair and snow clearing, and support for the homeless.
In 2023, City council accepted a 2.4% raise, spitting in the faces of Edmontonians who are struggling to survive. With the cost of living at an all time high, crime at an all time high and record food bank usage, the actions of City Council is unacceptable. With your signatures, I am calling for the resignation of Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, along with councillors Keren Tang, Andrew Knack, Jo-Anne Wright, Aaron Paquette and Ashley Salvador. It's time for our voices to be heard.
