EPSB marks shouldn't decrease based on online assessments while learning from home.

The Issue

Learning at home is not the same experience as learning in a classroom. The transition from normal in school learning to an online-based learning approach is a new concept for EPSB students, and therefore is very experimental. Furthermore, the adjustment from in school learning to online-based learning is already stressful enough for most students, therefore, it would not be fair to add additional weight on the shoulders of students in the form of assessments that may be detrimental to students' marks. Assessments should still be conducted, there is no doubt, however, the way the assessments affect students' marks should be similar to Calgary's approach, in that they can only improve a student's mark if they perform well, not decrease it. Many students are transitioning to post-secondary in the coming year, therefore, it is unfair to take the normal (in school) approach to summative assessments in this experimental form of learning. In this case, it is better for EPSB to take the same approach that CBE is taking. This movement is not to make students leave behind their school work, a regulation will be put in place. If the student is not putting any effort into the course (i.e. skipping classes, missing tests, no effort in assignments), in that case, the teacher should be able to give an INCOMPLETE to the student for that course. This way, students will not be leaving their learning behind. Thank you for understanding.
