understanding the edm community and allowing the rave box into Claremont California
The Issue
we are a retail store named the rave box. The rave box began business in February of 2020. We are a retail store that sells clothing and accessories for music festivals and raves. We have had some set backs the last few months of 2022 leaving us to forcefully have to find a temp location after a drunk driver had hit a fire hydrant and flooded our entire store location that we were in for two years. We found a temp space, it was in a horrible low kept shopping center that we no longer felt safe in and had break ins in our cars multiple times. We decided we wanted to find a safer, nicer area to be in. We were offered a retail space in Claremont village and got accepted from the landlord. We have gave a check to move in, along with signing a lease. Weeks pass and we announced our new location on our social medias. A women messaged us telling us that we are already not welcomed and that nobody wants us in town because of our type of retail business. She also mentioned that she and others around are worried that our window displays and clothing are not G-rated. She has expressed that because we are moving in as a new business that we are going to scare people from wanting to walk on that street because of our window displays not selling items to there liking. She mentioned she didn't want to come into our shop and have her daughter "ask for a skimpy outfit" being that we sell clothing for raves. She then complained to the city and let the city know that we sell clothing such as our bikinis, and pasties and told the city how we use lots of bright colors and use led lights inside of our shop. This man from city hall has then reached out to our landlord to let him know that we will not be allowed to have our "rave store" open in the Claremont village for the following reasons. He feels we should not have sales and that our items should not be on sale for $14 or less because it is "low cost" and does not fit in with the high end shops in Claremont village. He then let us know that we are not allowed to sell "pasties" because he feels we are a sex shop! In which we are not at all a sex shop. He let us know that he does not feel we would fit into Claremont because we use led lights and is labeling the women in the edm community similiar to "prostitutes because of the clothing we wear when attending events. They are also giving us the run around and telling us that we cannot decorate so much like our usual decor because it "needs to fit in with Claremont standard" They basically are telling us that we cannot be who we really are as a store because its too "flashy" for them and because we don't look like the other stores around us. They are telling us that a rave store is a sex shop in which it is not. They are telling us that we cannot have our everyday rave outfits in our front window on our mannequins to be displayed because others won't find it "family friendly". They are also saying that being a rave store is only a seasonal business like a halloween store so they said. Its not fair and we deserve respect. We as the edm community also deserves better respect rather then just being judged always from people who do not know anything about this community and lifestyle. They feel because we are not a normal boutique like all the others around us that we don't fit in. Regardless of our sales we have made throughout the years to show how busy we get. We were told if we come into there downtown area that we will attract all of the sex workers in Pomona off holt. Its body shaming women and it is absolutely unfair to not be able to express our true selves as a rave store. We are extremely heartbroken that the rave community isn't being taken serious in a town we have always dreamed of being in. Why is there so much hate in the edm community? We are all just normal people who deserve nice things like everyone else. We are very very giving people and have been since we started our business back in 2020! Ask anyone around and you will know how hard working we are and how much time and love we have put into building the rave box.
