Today, December 31, 2021, the Edison Public Schools Board of Education had released a statement that only mandated remote learning for those students who have been affected by covid. While reading this letter all I wanted to say to those who wrote this was, “please read this again out loud, to yourself”.

I speak for the numerous bright students of Edison who have expressed great concern about this new policy. Those concerns not only by the students but the parents seem to be disregarded despite their efforts during the past four months, continuously going to school while social distancing and continuing to excel with the constant fear of catching the virus or even worse passing it on to a loved one.

Collectively, we were dumbfounded reading these statements, it was almost as if the board of education was negligent to the facts of the virus and had painted it to seem like a fad or trend that only happened during break hoping that it would become a fever dream in a week or so. However, this fantasy is wrong. Only allowing those who have tested positive for the virus to be allowed to participate in remote learning is not sufficient to not only stop the spread of Coronavirus but protect our children. I ask the authors of this letter, With the apparent growing positive case numbers, that have recently broken all records in state history, do you think that it is impossible for Coronavirus to not continue to spread when we come back to school? Were the ones who were supposed to get it infected already have and everyone else is assured safety. Is it impossible to not get affected with Covid-19 after Jan 3 at 7:40 AM? When we all sit shoulder to shoulder in the cafeteria?  When we all squeeze through the halls? When we get stepped on walking through the intersection? Will coronavirus just disappear?

I understand if this is all an attempt to preserve the ever so rigorous and resourceful learning culture that Edison provides, but are the grades we receive, field trips, school dances, our test rankings more important than the lives and mental health of our students? It all comes down to the fact that if students are going to school uncomfortable and fearing their life then they should not go at all.

Although there are many flaws with the Covid-19 precautions set by the Edison Public Schools throughout these past months that could’ve possibly endangered many students and families, it is pivotal to talk about the option of remote learning since it is a problem put right in front of us.

In no way, do I mean any disrespect towards any of the efforts and sacrifices made by Board Members, Principals, and Staff of Edison. Although I respect their decision and can somewhat understand why it was made, I believe that as an American citizen and student in this district you have the right to fight for your beliefs. All students should be able to speak their minds because communication between students and staff is the only way we can improve our system of public education.
