Ecuador- Slippery as oil, flexible as rubber.

Ecuador- Slippery as oil, flexible as rubber.
The Issue
In Ecuador, there is more than meets the eye. Underneath the surface, Ecuador has a lot of problems with things like Neo-Colonialism and colonialism, but another problem still plagues Ecuador to this day. That is the history of rubber and oil extraction in the Amazon that causes environmental and social problems. In rubber extraction during the 1900’s and 2000’s, rubber companies would come to Ecuador to extract rubber from trees, which would lead to environmental challenges. Indigenous people were also working on these rubber outpost, so they essentially were working for people who are destroying their home, and there is virtually nothing that they could do about it. Similar to this, oil is extracted from the Amazon as well. European countries and the U.S came into Ecuador to take oil, with oil as the only concern. The removal of both of these resources caused pollution and deforestation, so the indigenous people that lived in the Amazon created and enacted social movements that makes the extraction minimal, or just completely get rid of it. Initially, it wasn’t effective but in the end, it seems to have worked.
