Stop land-based aquaculture from damaging rural Mi'kma'ki/ Nova Scotian ecosystem
The Issue
Kespukwitk or "lands' end" is the Mi'kmaq district encompassing Chebogue Point, a beautiful, natural ecosystem in the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth. Chebogue Point is also the site of a proposed land-based aquaculture project. Although land-based Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) can be touted as mitigating many of the environmental impacts from open pen cage systems (isolating fish from the natural environment, eliminating farmed fish from escaping pens, providing security from diseases, infestations and predators, and reducing waste released through retention), the capital costs involved in establishing the RAS units are very high, the energy costs needed for pumping & treating large amounts of water are also very high, and like all "contained" waste systems, 100% removal of waste from effluent water is infeasible. According to the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee (ECCLRC) report on the environmental impacts of salmon farming to the Scottish Parliament (March 2018), the Scottish Salmon Producers Organization (SSPO) indicated “significant” challenges with scaling technology and state no commercial scale RAS system for the seawater production of salmon has, to date, been commercially successful. Given that it has been four-years since NS's auditor general issued a report that the province is failing to protect species at risk, now is NOT the time to gamble on an important coastal habitat in Nova Scotia. YOU can make your concern known by signing this petition to send a firm message to the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth to NOT allow land-based aquaculture and to NOT rezone Chebogue Point to Rural Industrial! Providing voice for the environment over profit by saying "NO" to entering into a Development Agreement with Boreal Salmon Inc. for a land based aquaculture at Chebogue Point.
