ECMA: A Call for Transparency and Stability

Addressing Recent Changes at the ECMA: A Call for Transparency and Stability

Music is the lifeblood of Canada's East Coast. For decades, the East Coast Music Association (ECMA) has played a pivotal role in nurturing and promoting the rich and diverse talent emerging from Atlantic Canada. Through its work, the ECMA has not only helped build careers but also contributed to the economic and cultural vitality of our region. The legacy of ECMA is one of collaboration, growth, and service to the music community.

However, recent sweeping changes within the ECMA have raised concerns among its members and the broader music industry. Long-standing contractors with deep institutional knowledge have been let go, and significant modifications have been made to the awards application process. These decisions were made without consulting the very people the ECMA exists to serve—the artists, industry professionals, and cultural stakeholders of Atlantic Canada.

While we understand that leadership transitions often bring about changes, the current approach has left many members feeling uneasy and confused. The lack of clear communication from the ECMA’s leadership, particularly regarding the rationale for these changes and the direction of the organization, has created a sense of instability at a time when our music industry needs clarity and support.

We believe in the potential of the ECMA to continue being a beacon for East Coast music. However, we are calling for greater transparency and consultation with the community moving forward. The music industry in Atlantic Canada deserves to understand why these changes are happening and how they fit into a broader, strategic vision for the future.

We respectfully request that the ECMA leadership, including the board and the CEO, provide a clear explanation of the recent decisions and share a comprehensive strategic plan that outlines the organization’s goals and priorities for the region. This will allow ECMA members and industry professionals to regain trust and feel confident in the organization’s direction.

The ECMA has always been a key player in shaping the future of East Coast music. With open communication and a collaborative approach, it can continue to fulfill that important role for years to come.
